The practical AI Search Optimization guide
Citation gap analysis: inspect the source, then improve the answer.
Record which pages live search answers cite for your buyer questions. Compare the usefulness of those pages with yours, and use AEOchamp to investigate the business and recommendation gaps alongside them.
Put it into practice
Choose the sample
Keep the citation question narrow.
Start with five buyer questions from one workflow. Pick one search experience, such as ChatGPT Search, and record the exact wording and date. Ask in a fresh conversation without adding your brand unless the question is explicitly about it. Save the response and source URLs, including sources that are publishers, directories, or customer discussions.
OpenAI’s explanation of ChatGPT Search citations shows how citations can be inspected. A source link and a brand recommendation are different events: an assistant can cite your tutorial without suggesting your product, or recommend your brand using another website as its source.
Make a small source ledger
Compare URLs, not just competitor names.
| Question | Cited page | Our relevant page | Next inspection |
|---|---|---|---|
| How do clients approve a design without an account? | Competitor guide explaining review links | Our client-approval workflow page | Does our page answer account requirements and show the steps? |
| How should an agency document approval? | Independent project-management article | Our approval-record help article | Does our article show the record and explain what it contains? |
| Which approval tools support external reviewers? | Software comparison page | Our product comparison page | Are capabilities, limits, and comparison criteria explicit? |
Add columns for system, date, exact answer, and the claim each citation supports. If you inspect ten answers and your URL appears in two, report “2 of 10 observed answers cited our URL.” Do not call it a market-wide citation rate. Keep source types separate, and never count three links in one answer as three successful answers.
Read the actual pages
Look for the detail a buyer can use.
Open the cited URL and your equivalent page. Compare the direct answer, instructions, examples, evidence, constraints, and who is responsible for the information. For an approval record, a useful source might show the fields recorded, how a user retrieves the record, and what it cannot prove. Those details are more actionable than copying its headings.
Write one hypothesis: “Our guide never explains how a reviewer confirms approval; the cited guide does.” Verify the workflow with the product team, then add the missing explanation and a real example. A citation does not reveal the system’s selection algorithm, so describe this as a content improvement hypothesis, not a proven ranking factor.
Google’s people-first content guidance offers a useful review lens: give readers a satisfying answer with trustworthy support. Extra words without extra usefulness will not close the gap.
Use the two diagnoses together
AEOchamp tells you where to investigate next.
Use Domain Clarity to check whether models understand your category and audience. Use User Intent to identify a relevant question and inspect Organic versus Mentioned recommendations. If an approval-workflow question has a large recommendation gap, it is a sensible candidate for a separate live-search citation review.
After improving the existing page, confirm it remains accessible and repeat your recorded search questions. Use a Champion live Domain Clarity check to review how the current site is explained. Document the observations rather than claiming an immediate update to model training knowledge. Continue with improving existing pages and measuring changes.
Your questions, answered
What is a citation gap?
A citation gap is a difference in source inclusion for a defined set of search answers. Record the question, system, date, cited URLs, and observation count before interpreting it.
Does AEOchamp measure citation gaps automatically?
No. Inspect source links in actual search answers separately. AEOchamp helps investigate business understanding and recommendation fit through Domain Clarity and User Intent.
Does a competitor citation prove their page is better?
No. It shows that the system cited that source in that answer. Compare its content and repeat observations before deciding what useful improvement to make.
