The practical AEO guide
What is AEO?
Be understood.
Be considered.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content and business information clear, accessible, and credible so systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI search features can use it in relevant answers.
For your business, that starts with two questions: does AI understand what you do, and does it consider you when someone needs it?
What a useful answer needs
A tool for small agencies that supports client feedback and approvals, with evidence of how that workflow works.
Your brand does not appear in the question. Your business information has to make the connection.
From vague promise to useful answer
What does AEO look like in practice?
Imagine you sell client approval software. Your homepage says “Transform the way your team works.” A buyer needs to know whether clients can review a design, leave feedback, and approve the final version. Make that connection explicit.
“The all-in-one platform that unlocks your team’s potential.”
It leaves the product category, customer, and actual task open to interpretation.
“Client approval software for small creative agencies. Collect feedback and approve designs in one place.”
Follow it with a workflow demo, supported file types, pricing, and a real customer example.
Then answer the next question on a dedicated page: “How can clients approve designs without creating an account?” Explain the steps and any limits. If your product requires an account, say so. Specific, accurate answers help people decide whether you fit.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
These terms overlap. Use them to describe the outcome you want, then focus on the work that helps your customers.
Search engine optimization
Help relevant pages get discovered in search results.
Example: your approval workflow page ranks for “client approval software”.
Answer engine optimization
Help your information support a direct answer or recommendation.
Example: an answer explains your approval workflow and when it fits.
Generative engine optimization
Focus on your presence in generated AI answers.
Often used alongside AEO for AI search visibility. The terminology is still evolving.
Keep your SEO foundations. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode require no special AI markup or extra optimization beyond established SEO practices. Read Google’s guidance on AI features.

Your first AEO session
Five steps.
One page to improve.
Start with a real customer need. You can make a useful first change without rewriting your whole website.
Find your starting point- 1
Write down five buyer questions
Use questions from sales calls, support tickets, and customer conversations. Include the audience and constraint: “Which approval tool works for a three-person design agency?”
- 2
Check what AI understands today
Record whether models recognize your domain, describe your category correctly, and name the right audience. In AEOchamp, start with Domain Clarity.
- 3
Find a question where you are missing
Use User Intent to compare results with and without your domain supplied. Inspect the individual answers and competitors before deciding what the gap means.
- 4
Improve the page that answers it
State the answer near the top. Show the workflow, eligibility, limits, and evidence. Link to it from your product page. Check that important content is accessible to crawlers.
- 5
Compare the results after your change
Rerun an eligible live Domain Clarity check to assess the current website. Record the model and date. Continue tracking search traffic, enquiries, and signups; one better AI response is only one signal.

Domain Clarity: does AI understand what you actually do?
Before you work on recommendations, check the description. AEOchamp shows whether models recognize your domain and how they describe your business category, audience, and purpose.
For our agency-software example, “a consultancy for large businesses” is a mismatch. “Client approval software for small creative agencies” is the description you want to verify.

Check whether your public business profiles and credible third-party descriptions tell the same story. Keep this baseline for later comparison across models and releases.
Once the description fits, move to User Intent: does the model suggest you for the buyer’s actual need?

User Intent: see whether understanding becomes a suggestion.
A model may understand your business when you name it, yet leave it out of a buyer’s question. AEOchamp creates five baseline buyer questions from your Domain Clarity profile when there is enough business context, then compares two responses:
- Organic score
- How strongly the model suggests your business when your brand is withheld.
- Mentioned score
- How strongly it connects your business to that need when your domain is supplied.

Start with what buyers need.
Five baseline intents turn your business profile into concrete questions your potential customers might ask.
Find the missed recommendation.
A score of 14 organic and 78 mentioned is a +64 gap: a strong fit when named, but a weak presence without the prompt.
Go beyond the average.
Expand an intent to compare individual model results and see which competitors appear beside each score.
Turn the gap into your next action.
Clarify your positioning.
Make the category, audience, and use case explicit on your homepage and product pages. Check that public business profiles tell the same story.
Investigate the missed connection.
This illustrative +64 gap suggests stronger fit when named. Review the answers, competing brands, and your coverage of the buyer’s question.
Check whether the question fits.
If your product cannot solve that need, choose a better question. If it can, make the capability and supporting evidence easier to find.
User Intent uses model training knowledge without browsing your website. Its scores describe model responses, not search positions, citation counts, or the chance of appearing in ChatGPT search. AEOchamp helps you diagnose what to investigate and improve; it does not guarantee recommendations or change model training knowledge.
Common questions about AEO
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It means improving your content and business information so answer systems can understand it and use it in relevant answers.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO builds on useful content, crawlability, indexing, and credible business information. Keep measuring your search traffic and conversions alongside your AI results.
Do I need special schema or llms.txt for AEO?
Google says no special AI schema or AI text file is required for its AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use appropriate structured data that matches your visible content, and focus first on accessible pages and useful answers.
Can I do AEO without buying a tool?
Yes. Start with five real buyer questions, check how answer systems describe your business, and improve one relevant page. AEOchamp helps you compare model results and separate business understanding from recommendation fit.
What does AEOchamp measure?
Domain Clarity checks how AI models recognize and describe your business. User Intent compares recommendation scores with your brand withheld and with your domain supplied, alongside competitors and individual model results. User Intent uses training knowledge without browsing. These scores are not Google rankings or citation counts.
How quickly will AEO changes work?
There is no fixed timeline. A live website analysis can assess your updated page, but it does not update a model’s training knowledge. Search indexing, model releases, and answer variation affect what people see. Compare repeated results and business outcomes instead of expecting an immediate recommendation.
