The practical AEO guide
AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what should you work on?
The names overlap. Your next task should not. Understand what each approach does, use one buyer question as your starting point, and measure the problem you are trying to solve.
Put it into practice
Three terms, connected work
What is the difference between AEO, SEO, and GEO?
SEO helps people find your pages in search. AEO helps answer systems understand and use your information. GEO focuses on visibility in answers generated by AI. The terms overlap; teams do not all use them the same way. Use these working definitions to decide what your website needs, rather than treating them as three separate campaigns.
| Approach | Primary goal | Work you can do | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO: search engine optimization | Earn relevant organic search visibility and visits. | Make pages crawlable, match search intent, write useful content, and improve internal links. | Search Console impressions and clicks, relevant organic visits, and conversions. |
| AEO: answer engine optimization | Make your business and answers understandable and useful to answer systems. | State what you do and who you help; answer specific questions with evidence. | Accurate business descriptions, relevant answer inclusion, and recommendation fit for buyer questions. |
| GEO: generative engine optimization | Make information usable in generated answers and relevant source selection. | Publish original evidence, clear explanations, and source material that supports a claim. | Observed brand mentions or citations for a defined set of prompts, engines, and dates. |
A page that explains how client approvals work can support all three. It can rank for a relevant search, directly answer a buyer’s question, and provide evidence a generative system could use. Publishing three nearly identical pages for the three acronyms adds little value.
One business, three useful jobs
Apply all three to one buyer question
Suppose you sell client approval software for small creative agencies. Your buyer asks: “How can clients approve designs without creating another account?” Here is what each approach adds.
SEO: make the page discoverable
Create a page with a descriptive title such as “Client design approvals without an account.” Link to it from your product and agency use-case pages. Check whether Google can index it.
AEO: give a usable answer
Open with a direct answer. Explain whether clients use a review link, what permissions they have, and how approval is recorded. State any plan or workflow limitations.
GEO: support the explanation
Show a real workflow screenshot and a documented example. Explain who tested it and when. Use evidence from your actual product rather than an unsupported “best tool” claim.
Choose your next move
Fix the bottleneck you can actually see
| What you observe | Start here | A concrete next action |
|---|---|---|
| Your useful page is not indexed | SEO fundamentals | Check the URL in Search Console. Resolve unintended noindex, access problems, or canonical conflicts before polishing the answer. |
| AI describes your software as a consultancy | Business clarity | Rewrite the homepage opening with your product category, audience, and core workflow. Align your About page and public profiles. |
| AI understands the category but your brand is a weak fit | Buyer intent and proof | Compare the specific buyer need with your page. Add a use-case explanation, feature evidence, and limitations where they are missing. |
| A competing source is cited for a useful answer | Content evidence and distribution | Read that source. Identify information it supplies that your site lacks, then publish evidence you can substantiate. |
You do not need a new acronym-specific team to begin. Assign one owner to one page, state the problem, and decide how you will check the result. The AEO checklist turns these decisions into concrete tasks.
Why AEOchamp fits this job
See whether the problem is understanding or recommendation fit
AEOchamp gives you a structured starting point instead of a collection of disconnected chat screenshots. Domain Clarity compares how models recognize and describe your business, including category, audience, and purpose. A mismatch tells you what needs investigating on your website.

In this illustrative table, a model calls the business a project management consultancy while the live website check identifies client approval software. That difference makes the next task specific: inspect the copy and supporting information that explain the product. A live check can assess the current website; it does not replace the model’s existing training knowledge.
User Intent then compares recommendation scores with your brand withheld and with your domain supplied, alongside competitors. It uses training knowledge without browsing. A large gap is a reason to inspect awareness and fit for that question, not proof of a missing Google ranking or a specific citation.
A manageable starting point
Begin with one question and one page
Choose a question a real buyer asked in a sales call, support ticket, or onboarding conversation. Find the page that should answer it. Run a Domain Clarity check, review the relevant User Intent results, and write down the clearest mismatch. Improve that page before expanding to ten more topics.
For Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says existing SEO practices remain relevant and there is no special AI schema or new AI text file requirement. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link, and inclusion is not guaranteed. Read Google’s AI search guidance.

Your questions, answered
Is AEO the same as GEO?
The terms overlap. AEO usually describes making information useful to answer systems, while GEO focuses on generated AI answers. These are working definitions, not universal standards. The same clear, useful page can support both.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Search discovery, crawlability, indexing, and useful content still matter. Keep improving your SEO while checking how AI systems understand and use your information.
Does AEOchamp measure Google rankings or citations?
No. Domain Clarity checks business recognition and descriptions. User Intent compares recommendation fit using model training knowledge without browsing. Use Search Console for Google search performance and inspect actual engine responses for citations.
Which should a small business start with?
Start with access and clarity. Make sure important pages can be indexed, state what you do and who you help, and answer one real buyer question. Use AEOchamp to identify an understanding or recommendation-fit problem before expanding the work.
